The solar collector/eye rests on the back between the wings, make sure you put Rafe where he can get sufficient sun to charge the battery. Depending upon the quality and quantity of sunlight, the LED illumination can last from 4-8 hours each evening. The unit requires 2-AA-NiCd rechargeable batteries that do come included.
