Have you ever heard the term "You make a better door than a window?" Well that would be Gridlock. Gridlock is a tall standing blue heron. He likes to stand and proudly pose, you would think he was a rock star or a politician. His big problem is that he is a little hard of hearing and when other herons yell, "Get out of the way!" He just stands there blocking the path. Gridlock's color consists of various shades of dark brown with hints of black, however the sun gives his protective high gloss finish different looks in the light. He stands 3 feet 8 inches high x 1 foot 6 inches wide and 10 inches deep as you look at him. This metal bird is handwelded in Africa of recycled 55 gallon steel drums by welders and their assistants who are provided with schooling, training, housing, food, and medical benefits. The metal drums are first burnt in order to remove any inner residue and outer color. They are then cut, flattened, and marked with the design prior to being cut. Each assistant then pounds the design into the form before handing it to the welder to be completed. Once the welder has completed the metal bird or metal animal, they are checked over by the welder, coated with 2 coats of protective polyurethane and tagged with the welder's name. Even though each bird or animal has a pattern, no 2 birds or animals are identical because each is hand made allowing for the character of the assistant and welder to be included in each striking metal piece. Don't be fooled by cheap imitations made of tin, these are long lasting steel birds that add elegance to any pond or garden. Gridlock promises to pay closer attention when other birds are talking to him. He looks very good when he poses and will enhance the look of your yard or water garden. Now if you can just give him a new home and maybe even a new name, he would be the most grateful blue heron you ever met. Click here to see a comparison between the sizes of the Heron and the Egret.
